Tuesday-and onward

Today is Tuesday 05/16/11, 1 week and 1 day into the challenge. Things were great until today. I am struggling today- I want to eat things that are not Paleo! I'm not feeling hungry, just unsatisfied. I think I know why. This morning I ate some fruit (blueberries and banana) and walnuts topped with whipped cream that I made myself. I added 1 tablespoon of honey to the heavy cream before I whipped it up. It was too sweet but I ate it anyway as I was trying to get out the door to work. Since then I've been craving crap. I really don't want to cheat. I will have ample opportunity to cheat each and every weekend between now and June 20th, the end of the challenge. Maybe the answer is to eat lots of meat and something that has some good fat. Alas, I am stuck here at work and there is nothing that fits that category!!! And I cant even workout although I brought my kettlebell and jumprope. I will try to work some activity in later however.
Now for what I ate:
Sunday (dinner)
poached Salmon with Hollindaise
broccoli steamed
salad with lemon emulsion dressing

Monday
went to work
coffee with cream
handful of almonds & macadamias
green apple
left over chopped salad with an avocado
chicken with spinach and mushroom topped with left over Hollindaise sauce

Tuesday
blueberries, banana & walnuts topped with whipped cream
coffee with cream
salad with turkey, ham and roast beef and red wine vinegar dressing
a bit more than a handful of almonds and macadamias
green apple
2 leftover meatballs
Around 11pm when  work had calmed down a bit I found myself eating!!!
YIKES!!
I ate a seafood salad and ham salad mini roll sandwich- you know the kind of roll i'm talking about...it's about as long as your middle finger and white flour all the way.
I also ate 2 weird tasting cookies. With disgusting blue frosting on them. When I discovered what I had done I was horrified!!! And then I was pissed off because it wasn't even a tasty cheat!

Sunday 05/15/11

Well, its been 6 days since the Challenge started. This week has been really great so far. I've not had any "detoxing" symptoms that I've heard about. Often people who start eating Paleo after a diet that is carb-centric feel tired, sluggish and like not working out. Thankfully it's been ok for me. In fact, I've noticed an increase in my ability to muscle through some WOD(workout of the day) @ CFCA (see the work outs here: crossfitcapeann.com), even doing the Friday WOD RX'd (which means you do them without modifying it with lighter weight, resistance bands or whatever) a first time for me ever! And a new personal best for me as I overhead squatted 105#!! Also, I was able to workout 4x this week instead of the usual 3. On Saturday during the "team" workout I noticed my pants were falling down as I ran along! Maybe my Weber-gas-grill size ass is starting to shrink!

This is what I ate Friday-Sunday
Friday
coffee with heavy cream and 2 tsp honey (I don't usually eat before I exercise)

WOD (workout of the day) @ CFCA see the workout here crossfitcapeann.com
2 fried eggs with left 2 over meatballs (made with almond meal)

almonds/macadamias, a mixed handful
1 chicken thigh and 1 meatball with tomato sauce

Saturday
coffee with heavy cream and 2 tsp honey
Team workout "Eva" - (I did 2 rounds solo and 3 rounds of 1/2 Eva, 35# KB for the whole workout and a red and purple resistance band to help with the pull ups). See the workout here: crossfitcapeann.com
2 scrambled eggs with 2 meatballs
green apple
greek salad (with some feta crumbled into it)
grilled chicken breast half
chocolate mousse pie thing
Now, I know the chocolate mousse part is bad and the few bits of feta were no-no's but I was at a friend's 50th birthday party (coincidentally her name is Eva, just like the team workout!! First she beat my ass then invited me to a party!) and I thought the chocolate thing looked worth it and it was! I had no beer, no wine, NO MARGARITAS! And, I want to a kid party at noon time and cheated not at all.

Sunday
Just to let you know, the sugar choco treat from last night made me sorry this morning. I woke up tired, I had stomach cramps and stuff to follow and wanted to take a nap at noon time. A priori knowledge right there.
Here's what I ate so far today:
coffee with heavy cream and 2 tsp honey
a few blueberries and blackberries
a few macadamias
chopped salad with chicken, celery, avocado, red onion, romaine lettuce, tomato, bacon. Dressed with the life changing outrageously delicious ghee mayo. I'm ashamed that it has a boring name like "salad". Truly a masterpiece. As good as the chicken salad. It's the ghee mayo.
Ghee mayo Recipe here: marksdailyapple.com/homemade-ghee-mayo/
I'm planning salmon on the grill for dinner with mixed green salad and contemplating paleo brownies.
Here's what I did: nothing!

Can mayo change your life...

Day 4 here in Paleo world. I know it sounds freaking ridiculous but I am feeling so great, energetic, well fed and satiated that I don't know what to do with myself! And they call this a diet! I've been eating Paleo for about 1 week now (but on the record since Monday) and then for days at a time prior to that. It's really really true, all that stuff that you read about the people living the Paleo lifestyle. They talk about feeling great, having mental clarity, energy.  Admittedly, when I read and saw the testimonials of the people who eat this way and crossfit I would think to myself  "That's genetics, she has good genes!" She must be like that naturally!" Maybe I am starting to feel changes and see some too. Even if I am seeing changes because I want to believe they are there, it's motivating!  I have noticed for the second day in a row that I don't feel that hungry. I eat, feel satisfied and then stop eating. In the past I would have to finish what was on the plate because there are children starving in North Korea and it's not good to be wasteful.

Here is what I ate:
coffee with a tiny bit of heavy cream and 2 tsp honey
1 green apple/handful almonds and a 5 macadamias
chicken salad wrapped in romaine lettuce leaves. (I'm tooting my own horn here...best chicken salad I"ve ever had - made my own Paleo Ghee mayo and used it. The ghee mayo pushed it over the top! YUM!  Recipe for ghee mayo here:  marksdailyapple.com/homemade-ghee-mayo/)
A few raspberries

Here's what I did:
Nothing! I went to work.

When Tuesday is just as bad

Tuesday I went to work. A 24 hour on call shift with lots of temptation. By 11:30 pm I really wanted to eat something bad, anything bad. Something non paleo! I was feeling sorry for myself, missing my 8 month old baby at home and in for a long night. Now that is really pathetic- it was only day 2- only 36 hours in! I did not cheat, or did I? Was that square of Black and Green's cheating? It is Paleo. In moderation. I know I read it somewhere. I really did. Maybe on the days that I am on call I can just bring Paleo brownies and ice cream and eat that all day and night. Alas, cheaters don't win and winners don't cheat. A wise man said that.

Breakfast
large iced coffee with heavy cream
2 hard boiled eggs and an avacado with salt and lemon
WOD: I only managed to do 1 round (instead of the prescribed 4) of  of 21 walking lunges and 21 burpees in the staff locker room @ the hospital I work at.
Lunch
left over salad and chicken breast from the prev night
Dinner
seafood salad wrapped in green lettuce leaves, cukes and an avacado
1 square of dark (72%) cacao Black and Green's organic chocolate

Wednesday 5/11/11, finished my call shift at 8 am and headed (like a bat out of hell) to my baby boy who was at the sitter, fed him quickly and  headed to Crossfit.
This is what I ate:
No breakfast or coffee
Brunch: coffee with heavy cream, 1/2 chicken breast and roasted kale, parsnip and onion.
Dinner: Steak with mushrooms and broccoli sauteed
Avacado, grapefruit, walnut and mixed green salad with vinegar and oil.
This is what I did: WOD @ CFCA (see the workout here crossfitcapeann.com

I noticed today that I was not very hungry and no cravings again. I do feel more even tempered and not tired despite my long long night! The workout was great and I did more than I thought I could do! I'm feeling good. I cannot believe I wanted to cheat last night, I felt so energized after the WOD. I'm confident I can do this!

Why do they call it Stormy Monday?

Monday 05/09/11 I started, in earnest, eating the Paleo way. Not too bad, no real cravings, no temptations to cheat. I'm feeling good, feeling like a contender.
This is what I ate:
Breakfast
1 green apple/a few almonds
coffee with heavy cream and 2 tsp honey
left over steak (probably 3 oz) with  mushrooms, onions & 2 eggs (from my chickens)
1green apple
Dinner
Mixed greens with walnuts, cranberries and veggies.  Red wine vinegar/olive oil dressing
Chicken breast, steamed broccoli with lemon and butter.
This is what I did: Crossfit Workout Of the Day (WOD) @ CFCA. See the workout here crossfitcapeann.com

The virgin post

So this is it.  The 6 week, buy in for 20$, winner take all, Paleo challenge! Also worth noting is that this  is a virgin blogger's first entry.  No, not a virgin's blog entry! I've never blogged before and generally have to rely on my 13 yo daughter to help me do anything tech, including resetting the radio stations in my car. However, since I'm pushing myself in all kinds of new ways, I decided to set it up myself. Success!  But this blog is not about that! This blog is going to be about my first attempt at eating the "Paleo", watching myself shrink and become svelte!
If you've found this blog than you probably already know what the Paleo diet entails.  In a nutshell you eat meat, veggies, limited fruits, nuts and fish. No grains or legumes. No sugar. No dairy. I'm not a big pasta, carb or junk food eater so I hope I can maintain. The purpose of the blog here is to give a voice to my successes, failures and feelings. Maybe someone will find this helpful. Maybe it will help me stay on track and reach my goal of becoming more (cross)fit and loosing 30#! It seems much more daunting on this side of 40. Perhaps it's the people and things happily accumulated over time: 3 children, a husband, 2 dogs, a growing flock of chickens and a high stress full time job. Oh, and there is the 600.00 large I am going to win through the Cape Ann Cross Fit when I win this Paleo challenge!
Last week I paid, weighed, got measured and committed. I even let (although I had no choice) someone take pictures of me: a front view including the gut (should it be plural since there is so much?), a side view &  picture from the back. Yes, a rear shot also. The rear end (which is as wide as a Weber grill- the deluxe one-) was part of the Glamour Shot. No breaks here. But then again I'm not looking for a break. I want to be accountable to myself and definitely don't want to be humiliated.
I will try and post daily about what I ate and did (or did not!)  & how I feel physically. Perhaps a musing or tirade about how I feel.  Good luck to me and to all the other challenge peeps out there!
